If you havent read part I of this series, be sure to check outQuestions to Ask in an Informational Interview for Flexible JobsOnce youve got your prospects lined up, your informational bewerbungsinterview questions organized, and your interviews scheduled, there is a protocol and propriety about the actual interviews that you should be careful to observe.Here are the dos of informational interviewingDO make your purpose and intent explicitly clear. Tell your subjects exactly why you want to interview them. You can assure there will be no misunderstanding about your purpose by addressing the next point.DO provide your questions in advance. Most subjects would appreciate knowing what you will be asking them. It helps them prepare and reassures them they wont be blindsided during your interview. You can simply email the questions. Perhaps four to seven general or open-ended questions, along the lines of inquiry outlined above, will be sufficient to set the scope and tenor of your upcoming interview.DO keep the interview short. Schedule the interview to be short, 20 to 30 minutes. A half hour is a lot of time to take out of someones busy day, especially if your subject works on billable hours. Let you subject set the tone and direction of your engagement, but be mindful of keeping the interview focused and to the point.DO show a personal interest in the person you are interviewing. Ask your subjects about the kind of work they do. Make your interviews as much about them as possible, and less about you.DO follow up immediately. This is one time when a personal handwritten thank-you note makes a whole lot mora sense than an on-the-fly email. Be sure to acknowledge your subjects time and advice, let them know you appreciate the opportunity, and tell them something specific about what you got out of the interview. Check back with your subjects periodically, perhaps every three to six months, just to let them know how youre doing. Many will take a personal interest in you.DO be prepared to show a brief bio or qualifications statement. Some subjects might ask about your background it helps them to know how to frame their answers. So, bring a two-paragraph narrative backgrounder THAT DOESNT SMACK OF BEING A RSUM. You can always offer to send a rsum later, but ONLY IF you are asked. Think of the bio as what you might read on a book jacket if you were a famous author. From your email contact, your subject should already have your name, phone number, and email address, but you can include these anyway. NOTE It is always a good idea to include this information as part of your email signature. Never leave an email recipient hunting for how to contact you.DO dress as if it this were a job interview. Even though this is NOT a jo b interview, show your subjects the courtesy and respect that good grooming evinces. Dressing well says you take the interview seriously and you care enough to look your very best.DO pick up the tab if your meeting is lunch or coffee break. Since you initiated the interview and your subject is doing you a favor, you paying would be most appropriate.Here are the donts of informational interviewingDONT make this into a job interview. Only discuss your skills and experience if the conversation goes in that direction and your subject asks about you.DONT focus only on you. Remember, you came to the interview to find out more about your subject and your subjects profession, business, or industry. The subject of the interview is not you.DONT take more time than agreed to. Unless your subject insists on taking longer, graciously excuse yourself when you have used up the agreed upon time. You can simply say, Well, I see weve used up the time allotted for our meeting. I know you need to get b ack to work. So Ill let you go, but would it be OK for me to email you back if I have any follow-up questions? I really appreciate the time youve taken to talk with me. Thank you.DONT abuse any confidences. You may find out things about people or events that are confidential and this is exactly how that information should remain.DONT ask for personal or confidential information. Your questions need to be short and focus primarily on objective information. Dont cross into your subjects personal life without being invited to go there. Likewise, dont pursue a line of questioning that will force your subject to reveal sensitive or confidential information. It would be embarrassing for both of you.DONT bring your portfolio. Again, this is not a job interview. It would be tacky to show up with your portfolio (or rsum) on the off-chance you might be asked to show it. If your subject is interested, you can come back later with it for a real job interview.DONT ask for favors let people offer . In the dynamics of human etiquette, it is always rude to maneuver someone into a corner to ask for a favor. It is more appropriate to let someone offer. It makes you look gracious when you accept and your subjects as magnanimous when they offer.A final note on informational interviewingRemember, informational interviewing is about getting information, not about inveigling your way into a job. If your interview subject offers to refer you to someone else or asks to see your rsum, thats a bonus. But dont expect or try to manipulate the circumstances to these ends. Youre better offer graciously accepting whatever advice and guidance your subjects might offer, thanking them, and moving on. We have to ad mit the ugly truth that age discrimination exists - theres no doubt about it.And theres no silver bullet for those facing it. If youre in the job market and over the age of 52, you will almost certainly face stereotypes and negative attitudes regarding your desirability because of your age. And in some cities, in some markets, that negative environment impacts candidates as young as 40 years of age.While theres nothing you can do to stop it, I have, over the years, observed which candidates and applicants have succeeded despite their age and which have failed because of it.If I had to summarize, Id say it appears to me that age discrimination is mindset discrimination first and foremost. And youll need to review how you are presenting your mindset - your attitude - to your future employer.Every hiring manager is asking herself, every HR person is asking himself, these questions about you and every other candidate theyre interviewingWill this candidate Be able to excel in this rol e? Be able to learn and adjust as the role evolves? Be able to master the tools and technologies involved today and tomorrow? Get along well with others on the gruppe? Take direction and feedback?And its important for you to realize that youth is the symptom, not the cause, of age discrimination.What I mean by that is that hiring managers are hiring for open-mindedness, flexibility, and a sociability with others. On average, theres a perception on the part of hiring managers, whether right or wrong, that those attributes are more frequently found in the young, as opposed to the experienced.And its worthwhile to review why these attributes have so much value in the business world today.As the world changes, businesses change even more rapidly. Companies sometimes need to jump on new trends before they pan out, or hedge their bets, or make sure theyre well-prepared for most contingencies. And that means theres always plenty of new to keep up with.So a workforce that is flexible, open- minded and interested in learning is far better than a workforce that is determined to keep doing it the old way.The old way works fine might be OK for you around the home, but in business, it has proven to be an enormous destroyer of value. Take a look at the hard times that old famous companies have fallen upon. Heck, even some of the newer tech companies that were darlings within the last decade have had difficulties mastering new environments.So expecting your future employer to be pleased with an old ways are tried and true mindset wont serve you well in your job search.So it is not necessarily youth itself that companies are hiring for, rather, it is those attributes that have proven effective in todays business environment.The cause of age discrimination is the perception around older professionals adaptability, curiosity, and team spirit youth is merely a symptom.Since you cant change your age, your goal is to address the underlying root causes of age discrimination - your goal is not to appear or act age-inappropriate - it is to present yourself, effectively, as a constructive, resourceful, coachable, team player.When confronting misperceptions in your job search, it is always better to show than to tell Describe situations in which you adapted new technologies to the problem at hand. It is helpful if these examples arent from the seventies, but rather represent transitions that your interviewer herself went through. Recount how you were able to help younger (and older) staffers get to a solution that was stumping all. Detail the challenges you faced and what tactics you used to overcome them. Relate your experiences with receiving and using feedback constructively. Discuss how you used the situation to update your behavior and outlook. Share the process you went through to find where you could perform better and the steps you took to achieve an improvement. Ideally, quantify that improvement. Illustrate with specific stories your interest in, and p assion for, the work that you do. Why does it drive you? What excites you about your work? In the classroom, the recruits are educated on how to use a gas mask and how it can save their lives on the battlefield if used properly. During the third week of training, they get to experience what it would be like to be under gas attack. Non-Lethal Gas in the Marines Gas Chamber Training The gas used in the Gas Chamber is chlorobenzylidene malononitrile, or CS Gas, a non-lethal substance that is used in all branches of the military and polizze departments as a riot control agent. Each recruit spends approximately 3-5 minutes in the chamber, depending on how well they cooperate. Breathing Exercisesin the Marines Gas Chamber Training The recruits enter the gas chamber with their masks donned and clear, but once the doors are se aled, the masks come off. For their first exercise, they have to break the seal of their mask, which will allow them to breathe in a little of the gas, but just as the tearing eyes and the coughing sets in, they are instructed to put their masks back on. The next step is to break the seal again, but only this time, they will set the mask on top of their heads. At this point, some of the recruits may begin to feel a sense of panic. Theireyes are now full of tears and the coughing gets worse because the gas is in their lungs. Removing the Masks in the Marines Gas Chamber Training The gas also burns the skin a little too, similar to a sunburn. Once their masks are donned and cleared for the second time, t hey must then remove their masks completely and hold them straight out in front of them, but by this time, most of the recruits have a little more faith in their masks. They know that the faster they take them off, the quicker they will be able to put the masks back on and be able to breathe again. Leaving the Marines Gas Chamber Once this step is completed, they file out of the gas chamber with arms spread out to their sides. Their eyes water like they just stepped out of a shower, and they continue coughing until their lungs are clear. This frightening but necessary training kenntnisse emphasizes the importance of wearing a gas mask when ordered and gives Marines confidence that the masks will protect them.
